Tipton

→  How We’re Building Better Communities: We’re supporting forward-looking local leaders who are building on Tipton’s small-town charm and quality of life amid a growing Central Indiana region.

A Place to Live and Grow

Tipton is a strong example of the Renewing Cities model being deployed in a community positioning itself for growth rather than decline. Located within commuting distance of Indianapolis and increasingly connected to the economic growth occurring north of the city, Tipton is working to attract new residents and investment while preserving the character and identity that make it an attractive small community. The Tipton Thrives Trust has acquired three buildings totaling approximately 19,000 square feet, with plans to continue expanding its portfolio to ensure economic growth translates into a more vibrant downtown.

Mayor Kegan Schmicker has been a critical leader in advancing this effort, bringing a philosophy of community ownership and local empowerment to Tipton’s redevelopment. Mayor Schmicker spoke at Sagamore’s 2025 Indiana Conference on Citizenship, where he emphasized that Tipton’s greatest asset is its people and that local government should empower residents to develop and execute their own ideas.

He continues to make the case that attracting and retaining residents requires more than economic development or landing a big employer—it requires a genuine sense of attachment to place in a community where people want to live, from safe neighborhoods and good schools to recreational and creative opportunities.
