We are living through what feels like an era of unprecedented division in our nation. We also have an unprecedented opportunity. The coronavirus crisis divided us physically.
Citizens build up their communities in many different ways in their neighborhood, city, state, country, and beyond-- but the end goal is the flourishing of these communities. Three significant examples of community-building citizens are Paul Estridge, Bill Taft, and Dave Miner.
This October, we are building on the success of the Harrison’s first rare books exhibit that took place July 2019.
Louis Levey built the Levey Mansion in 1905 and located it in the distinctive Meridian corridor during Indiana’s cultural golden era, which lasted from the early 19th century and into the early 20th.
When Indiana’s most distinguished citizens receive the Sagamore of the Wabash award, they read a parchment that calls them to serve as counsel to the governor.
Sagamore is honored to host an exhibit of historic, rare books that contributed to the shaping of the American idea through the ages. From a first edition of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense to The Federalist (1788) to the works of Thomas Hobbes, Machiavelli and St. Augustine, this exhibit from the Remnant Trust brings history to life through the pages of original, first edition and rare manuscripts.
It seems fitting for a group such as ours to meet this evening in the First Amendment Room of the National Press Club. Two years after the creation of the U.S. Constitution, James Madison led the original U.S. Congress in crafting the First Amendment. They met in New York City beginning on March 4, 1789, to draft and approve what has become our Bill of Rights.
Bart Peterson is Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications for Eli Lilly and Company. From 2000 to 2007, he served two terms as the mayor of Indianapolis. Before joining Lilly in 2009, Bart served as managing director of Strategic Capital Partners, as a fellow with the Institute of Politics at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, and as a distinguished visiting professor of public policy at Ball State University.
The American Idea offers a society where all its citizens can flourish. Sagamore Institute honors those individuals and enterprises whose heroic action transformed lives at home and abroad.
