The Challenge: For too long, Africa’s greatest export has been its talent, with many of its brightest minds working and living abroad while sending remittances home. This means that across most of the continent, there is not enough capital reaching local economies. This comes at a critical moment for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME’s) as regional, cross-border, and global trade is expanding. The gap is stark: The IFC estimates there is demand for $331 billion in financing for MSMEs in sub-Saharan Africa that has gone unmet. In short, opportunity and innovation are expanding faster than capital.
