Don Eberly

Former White House & State Department Official

One Big Thing: Don Eberly served in both the White House and State Department under President Bush, including a senior role tasked with building civil society institutions in post-war Afghanistan — putting his scholarship on civic renewal to work in one of the most challenging environments on earth.

  • His book The Rise of Global Civil Society, produced through a Sagamore fellowship funded by the Bradley Foundation, was named one of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s top ten books “That Drive the Debate” in 2008.
  • Before his federal service, Eberly co-authored a book on the voluntary sector with Ryan Streeter while both worked alongside Jay Hein at the Hudson Institute.
  • His work in Afghanistan represented a direct application of ideas about civil society that he and his Sagamore colleagues had developed over years of research and policy work in Indiana.
