Indiana Defense Network (NCCO)

A One-Stop-Shop

Indiana is a strategically located, critical asset in our Nation’s defense and ongoing security.  In fact, few other places can claim the full range of defense assets and capabilities present here — from uniformed military and thousands of civilians and defense contractors, to assets that support the missions of each Armed Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of State, and many other Federal Departments and Agencies. Indiana is playing a major role in strengthening U.S. national security, and the National Center for Complex Operations (NCCO), now the Indiana Defense Network, is a central component of this initiative. The NCCO acts as a “one-stop-shop” to connect state, federal, and private interests with services, programs, and training and testing capabilities that will serve defense industry partners and a variety of government and non-government agencies.

Areas of Focus

The NCCO’s initial focus areas include unmanned systems, cyber systems, special operations, modeling and simulation, power and energy, and mobile sensing and surveillance. Click to boxes below to learn more.

Unmanned Systems

The NCCO’s wealth of real operating environments make it the center of excellence for unmanned systems, sensors, and payload development, integration, testing and training — with a focus on the strategic, tactical, and scientific utilization of unmanned systems, and a recognition of the strategic value these systems offer the defense, intelligence, law enforcement, homeland security and scientific communities. Indiana’s assets include the only brick and mortar full scale urban environment where UAS can operate with full-spectrum sensor capabilities.

With unmanned aerial systems (UAS) comprising a rapidly growing portion of the military budget, and with Congress encouraging the development of UAS platforms, finding the absolute optimal locations for the development, testing, fielding and crew training needs of these incredible systems has become more critical than ever.

Unmanned Systems

Cyber Systems

NCCO assets are a national resource for the development, fielding and operation of secure and resilient cyber systems and cyber operations, while providing a convenient, economical and secure location for conducting worldwide networked training operations for the military, government agencies and industry. Indiana offers a robust, multifaceted C4ISR infrastructure for integration with all aspects of cyber R&D, T&E and operational training.

Cyber Systems

Special Operations

Indiana, with its integrated defense assets, is the “go to” location for the most realistic, unique, integrated special operations and conventional missions training available anywhere. Defense locations in the state have a long and proud history of providing critical support to Special Operators, from training sites to equipment design and development.

Modeling & Simulation

Indiana offers unmatched, unique and realistic settings for the use of state-of-the-science, multi-dimensional modeling and simulation to create, war game and train for irregular warfare and homeland defense scenarios — for research, engineering, design, development, testing and evaluation and training. At the geographic center of the continental United States, Indiana is a regular participant in the annual National Level Exercise, and a regular host to various disaster preparedness and operational exercises at the Federal, State and Local agencies, including those from many other states.

Modeling & Simulation

Power & Energy

Indiana is a preferred location for the development, testing and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives for use at forward operating locations. The Energy Systems Network and the Battery Innovation Center are just two examples of state-sponsored activities that support energy initiatives in Indiana.

Mobile Sensing & Surveillance

NCCO's partnerships with private sector security contractors and government agencies positions the NCCO to provide the latest technological surveillance equipment to the men and women protecting our borders and coasts. The imminent launch of the Homeland Security Capability Integration Center will advance this mission by bringing together academic institutions, military training facilities, and the private sector.
