The Center for Mental Health and Community Wellness was established to address the critical gaps in well-being and community connectivity that have persisted despite Indiana’s strong economic growth. Recognizing that thriving businesses do not always equate to thriving communities, the Center was created to explore and implement strategies that foster happier, healthier, and more connected lives for individuals and families. Its mission is to apply the successful principles of economic development to the “people part” of community building, focusing on mental health, holistic well-being, and the social drivers of thriving.

This initiative was inspired by former Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels’ observation that, while Indiana has made great strides in efficiency and business environment improvements, it has struggled to address key issues impacting the quality of life for Hoosiers. The Center’s work seeks to bridge that gap by advancing policies, programs, and practices that prioritize the health and well-being of Indiana’s people and communities.

Working as a Senior Fellow under Sagamore Institute, Jay Chaudhary will lead the Center for Mental Health and Community Wellness brining his extensive experience and visionary leadership in behavioral health reform to the organization. With a proven track record as the Director of the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction, Chaudhary successfully led efforts to overhaul Indiana’s behavioral health system, navigating complex policy landscapes and advocating for increased access to care.

His deep understanding of the systemic barriers to mental health care and his innovative approach to addressing them make him uniquely qualified to lead this initiative. Chaudhary’s ability to bridge traditional and holistic mental health solutions aligns perfectly with the Center’s mission. His commitment to exploring social drivers of thriving and fostering community connections ensures a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach to mental health and wellness.

Under Chaudhary’s leadership, the Center aims to redefine what it means for communities to thrive by implementing actionable strategies that empower individuals, strengthen families, and enhance overall well-being. His leadership will focus on increasing access to behavioral health care, broadening the definition of mental health, and addressing the social drivers of thriving to create meaningful and lasting change. His pragmatic, non-partisan approach ensures that the Center’s work will be both impactful and inclusive, setting the foundation for meaningful change across Indiana and beyond.
