Andy Scheer Criminal Justice Reform

Andy Scheer is a rising 2L at Indiana University’s, Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Andy studied religion at Huntington University and Theology and ethics at Emory University in the earlier parts of the 2000’s. Before returning to law school in 2022 Andy was a touring musician, winemaker and in sales for the worlds largest music retailer. This summer at the Sagamore Institute Andy will be researching justice reform in conjunction with the Indiana Public Defender’s Commission.

Ben Yates Impact Investing

 I am currently a rising sophomore at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. I am studying computational physics alongside an interdisciplinary PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics) program. My interests include understanding different systems, from material to ecological, to Human as well as outdoor activities like mountain biking, skiing, and flyfishing. I am very excited about working alongside and learning from the other interns and the Sagamore team members this summer as well as getting hands-on experience in the social impact investing world. 

Deacon Fountain Africa Portfolio

Deacon Fountain is a graduate student at the University of Indianapolis in the International Relations program. He enjoys learning about the rest of the world, sports, and history. This summer he looks forward to working on a project with Mr. Cassell and learning about Liberia in the process.  

Jim Dittoe Citizenship Portfolio

Jim Dittoe has had over thirty-five years of experience in the field of community and economic development, having been the Chief Executive Officer in Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development Councils in Ohio, Indiana (including Kokomo, Evansville, and Ft. Wayne), and Peoria, Illinois. 

In 1995, Jim established Winning Communities™, Inc., an enterprise that helps communities and organizations envision the future and develop goals, measurable objectives, and action plans for achievement. 

Jim was engaged by the NCAA Division II to expand its Community Engagement program of outreach for student athletes. The program is called The TEAM Initiative – Total Engagement Adds Meaning. 

Jim is now working with Mayors and community leaders in Indiana and Ohio to help establish Youth Civic Engagement Councils to develop young leaders in cities and towns. 

Morgan Rossman National Secruity Portfolio

Morgan Rossman is a student at Anderson University, majoring in national security and history. His interests include reading, creative writing, and travel. He is looking forward to being an intern at Sagamore for the opportunity to learn, network, and grow. 

Ty Harrington Citizenship Portfolio

Ty Harrington is a rising sophomore at the University of Notre Dame where he studies the Program of Liberal Studies and Philosophy & Theology. He is an avid reader of all genres and periods, though he has a particular interest in political and philosophical texts. He also enjoys spending time with his family, friends, and especially his dog. At Sagamore, he is most looking forward to joining and learning from a team that works at the forefront of economic policy in Indianapolis and the greater community.

Meet Sagamore's Summer 2022 Interns

Andrew Bruner • Policy Center Research

Andrew Bruner is a native of Upland, Indiana, who is passionate about problem-solving, advocacy, and economic development with interests in both public and private sectors. Andrew is a rising Junior at Taylor University, where he plans to graduate with a BS in Political Science, Philosophy, and Economics with Information Systems and Analytics. His interests outside of school include daydreaming, playing strategy games, listening to indie rock music, following oil markets, spending time with friends and family, and using the Oxford comma. After graduating from Taylor, Andrew plans to pursue a master’s program or fellowship oriented around leadership development, public policy, or business entrepreneurship. At Sagamore Institute, Andrew is excited to participate at the forefront of public policy and to learn from some of the best in the field.

Denise Chisveto • Africa Rising Research

Denise Chisveto is currently enrolled as an LL.M student in the World Trade law track at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of law. She completed her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland) in 2019 where she found a niche in international trade and investment law. Outside of school, Denise is interested in volunteer work, traveling, listening to music, and exploring nature. Denise is looking forward to working at Sagamore this summer to further her interests in policy research and international development, especially in Africa. She also hopes to gain knowledge and practical experience to enhance her career and pursue her passion for improving communities and individuals’ lives.

Jackson Hern • Policy Center Research

Jackson Hern is a rising junior at Clemson University in South Carolina pursuing a B.A.’s in Economics and Political Science. He is extremely extroverted, an avid skier, and a sports enthusiast. He also enjoys being outdoors with friends anytime he can! After undergrad, he plans to attend law school to study constitutional law. He is most looking forward to honing in on specific policy interests through exploring Sagamore’s work around Indianapolis and around the globe.

John Maier • Africa Rising Research

John Maier is a rising sophomore at Princeton University where he studies history. His typical school interests are related to early Christianity, but he is also interested in public policy. During his internship at Sagamore, he is most looking forward to learning more about Liberia and policies related to developing countries.

Mac Scully • Africa Rising Research

Mac Scully is originally from the United States. He has recently relocated to Kenya, hoping that he would be able to experience opportunities that would allow him to grow both personally and professionally. He has been conducting research on a local program in Nairobi. He is looking forward to learning from researchers at the Sagamore Institute.

Meet Sagamore's Summer 2021 Interns

Ian Ansel • Africa Rising Research

Ian Ansel is a rising 2L student at IU-McKinney School of Law. Originally from Colubmus, OH, Ian graduated from Mercyhurst University in 2014 with a degree in Political Science, International Relations concentration. Between undergrad and law school, Ian played professional hockey and moved to Milwaukee, WI to train for the Olympics in Long Track Speed Skating. He met his wife, Melanie, in Milwaukee and they got married last year. Ian also works a part-time job at Peace Water Winery and his interests include sports, wine, cars, films, and reading.

Faith Austin • Policy Center Research

Faith Austin is a rising senior at Carmel High School and is on track to receive the International Baccalaureate Diploma this May.  She plans to take a gap year to study abroad before attending university and pursuing a career in the intersection of law, global affairs, and international development. At the Sagamore Institute, Faith enjoys stimulating academic discussions with the intern class, connecting with the senior fellows, and pursuing eye-opening research projects. She currently serves on Mayor Jim Brainard’s Youth Council and enjoys geocaching, video production, and volunteering at her church.

Nick Baird • Policy Center Research

As a result of attending public schools in Marion county, Nick is passionate about closing the wealth, income, and achievement gaps. This summer, he hopes to learn more about and contribute to existing efforts in that arena. He is a Master of Public Affairs candidate at the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs focusing on public finance and community development. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and, prior to attending graduate school, spent time as a licensed financial advisor providing investment guidance to retirees in Ann Arbor Michigan. 

Sophia Downey • Policy Center Research

Sophia Downey is a rising senior at Indiana University-Bloomington studying Policy Analysis through the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. She is also minoring in Spanish and Financial Literacy and is pursuing a Certificate of Applied Research and Inquiry. Her main policy interests include economic policy and national security. This summer she looks forward to working with Sagamore Institute fellows and the opportunity to giveback to her hometown of Indianapolis.

Kyle Ellis • Africa Rising Research

Kyle Ellis is a J.D. candidate at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis. In his free time, he enjoys reading, watching movies, hiking, and traveling. This summer, he is looking forward to having more time to explore and discover new things about Indianapolis.

Priya Malik • Criminal Justice Research

Priya Malik is a rising 2L at Indiana University McKinney School of Law. She completed here undergraduate studies in Philosophy and Political Science, with a minor in Human Rights Studies at Purdue University. Among other accomplishments, Priya served as the President of the College Democrats of Indiana and won the Distinguished Senior in Philosophy award. A resident Hoosier of six years now, Priya’s passion for local and state politics, governance, and community development pushed her to pursue law. At law school, Priya currently serves as the Auction Chair for the Women’s Caucus and as the Student Bar Representative for the Asian Law Students’ Association.

Tim Sullivan • Policy Center Research

Tim Sullivan is a Political Science and Sociology double major at the University of Notre Dame. While he has had a lifelong fascination for all things government and history, he is particularly interested in topics of civic engagement, community development, and social connections in the context of the modern digital age. Tim is a lifelong resident of Indianapolis and is excited to work in a program that is based in his hometown. He is also really looking forward to getting to know a group of passionate and committed interns this summer.
