Defense Insights
From research to readiness—we're shaping tomorrow’s defense.
Sagamore’s research on defense and U.S. national security combines insights and commentary on strategy and policies with the nuts and bolts of implementation systems and industry. Rooted in Midwest values and interests but with a global outlook, our scholars and practitioners are advancing ideas that make America and the world safer and more prosperous for all.
This collection of essays from Sagamore Senior Fellows Dr. Jerry Hendrix and Alan Dowd carves out a pathway to renew U.S. national security by embracing the time-tested wisdom of peace through strength, emphasizing the need for sustained and smart American engagement, recognizing the dangers of a hollowed-out defense industrial base, digging into the nature of the threats posed by China and Russia, and emphasizing the need to bring the Free World together to face down those threats.

This report from Senior Fellow Dr. Jerry Hendrix redefines how we measure the power of presence. By quantifying the strategic and economic impact of forward-deployed naval forces, Dr. Hendrix makes a bold case for sustained American maritime leadership in an era of global uncertainty.
In collaboration with the Department of Defense and Conexus Indiana, Sagamore is leading an in-depth analysis of Indiana’s defense manufacturing workforce. This initiative dives deep into how the state’s legacy industries are not just adapting—but actively fusing—with cutting-edge technologies to elevate Indiana’s strategic role in securing America’s future and identifies opportunities to supercharge the Hoosier state’s leadership in defense innovation and wofkforce transformation.

Sagamore has also partnered with the New American Industrial Alliance (NAIA) Foundation to undertake a comprehensive research initiative to identify critical choke points and structural bottlenecks that hinder the scaling of manufacturing across the United States’ most important industries, including advanced technology, energy, and defense-related sectors.

Led by naval historian Bruce Elleman, this project explores how the U.S. can counter a potential Chinese blockade of Taiwan using historical insights, regional maritime practices, and emerging technologies to develop modern, non-kinetic deterrence strategies.
