Meet Sagamore's Summer 2021 Interns

Sagamore is committed to developing the next generation of young leaders with a creative vision to pursue the common good and advance human flourishing. We welcome the following students who share a passion for championing free enterprise, fostering individual opportunity, and expanding democracy. 

Ian Ansel • Africa Rising Research

Ian Ansel is a rising 2L student at IU-McKinney School of Law. Originally from Colubmus, OH, Ian graduated from Mercyhurst University in 2014 with a degree in Political Science, International Relations concentration. Between undergrad and law school, Ian played professional hockey and moved to Milwaukee, WI to train for the Olympics in Long Track Speed Skating. He met his wife, Melanie, in Milwaukee and they got married last year. Ian also works a part-time job at Peace Water Winery and his interests include sports, wine, cars, films, and reading.

Faith Austin • Policy Center Research

Faith Austin is a rising senior at Carmel High School and is on track to receive the International Baccalaureate Diploma this May.  She plans to take a gap year to study abroad before attending university and pursuing a career in the intersection of law, global affairs, and international development. At the Sagamore Institute, Faith enjoys stimulating academic discussions with the intern class, connecting with the senior fellows, and pursuing eye-opening research projects. She currently serves on Mayor Jim Brainard’s Youth Council and enjoys geocaching, video production, and volunteering at her church.

Nick Baird • Policy Center Research

As a result of attending public schools in Marion county, Nick is passionate about closing the wealth, income, and achievement gaps. This summer, he hopes to learn more about and contribute to existing efforts in that arena. He is a Master of Public Affairs candidate at the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs focusing on public finance and community development. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and, prior to attending graduate school, spent time as a licensed financial advisor providing investment guidance to retirees in Ann Arbor Michigan. 

Sophia Downey • Policy Center Research

Sophia Downey is a rising senior at Indiana University-Bloomington studying Policy Analysis through the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. She is also minoring in Spanish and Financial Literacy and is pursuing a Certificate of Applied Research and Inquiry. Her main policy interests include economic policy and national security. This summer she looks forward to working with Sagamore Institute fellows and the opportunity to giveback to her hometown of Indianapolis.

Kyle Ellis • Africa Rising Research

Kyle Ellis is a J.D. candidate at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis. In his free time, he enjoys reading, watching movies, hiking, and traveling. This summer, he is looking forward to having more time to explore and discover new things about Indianapolis.

Priya Malik • Criminal Justice Research

Priya Malik is a rising 2L at Indiana University McKinney School of Law. She completed here undergraduate studies in Philosophy and Political Science, with a minor in Human Rights Studies at Purdue University. Among other accomplishments, Priya served as the President of the College Democrats of Indiana and won the Distinguished Senior in Philosophy award. A resident Hoosier of six years now, Priya’s passion for local and state politics, governance, and community development pushed her to pursue law. At law school, Priya currently serves as the Auction Chair for the Women’s Caucus and as the Student Bar Representative for the Asian Law Students’ Association.

Tim Sullivan • Policy Center Research

Tim Sullivan is a Political Science and Sociology double major at the University of Notre Dame. While he has had a lifelong fascination for all things government and history, he is particularly interested in topics of civic engagement, community development, and social connections in the context of the modern digital age. Tim is a lifelong resident of Indianapolis and is excited to work in a program that is based in his hometown. He is also really looking forward to getting to know a group of passionate and committed interns this summer.
